Gangaji Text Excerpt:

Gangaji:
There’s something absolutely real here. it’s available. It’s inviting me in. And I’ve got to pay very close attention. And I did. And he told me to stop whatever I was doing. Of course, I first heard that in a sort of gross physical way, but he was pointing much deeper – my internal search, my internal escape. And when I realized how deeply he was pointing and how big this word “stop” was, it was terrifying. I assumed if I stopped, I would regress, or I would lose my accomplishments and my states.
Tom Park:
Well life is about everything you are full of right?
Gangaji:
That’s right. It would stop and would all go. He would even say that: “lose your past and lose your future. And then you will discover what is always here.” Because that is what he was offering. That’s what he was pointing to. And finally I was willing to meet the horror, to me what it felt like was death. And I discovered this fulfillment that needed nothing for it’s continuance or it’s maintenance. That needed nothing for it’s being.
Tom Park:
So there’s a price of admission?
Gangaji:
Yes. It’s a huge price. It’s your whole identity. Your identity as somebody who is going to get something someday. So it’s not for the weak of mind or the faint of heart. It’s a huge step, of course, because my whole conditioning, as all of us as human beings, is to go, is to find what’s next, is to protect yourself, watch your back
Tom Park:
Let’s start with that.
Gangaji:
Yes.
Tom Park:
Here we are, all Americans listening today. We’re in this soup. We’re in this culture, this great wave that we co-inhabit here. It’s pretty full, pretty scintillating stuff, okay? It’s not boring.
Gangaji:
That’s right.
Tom Park:
So from that, that’s a disease you’re saying.
Gangaji:
At a certain point it is.
Tom Park:
Or at least it’s a bad trade off?
Gangaji:
When there arises within someone some mysterious something. I call it the call to be free or the call home. But without a name. Something that is simply not satisfied with what we throw at it: accomplishments, goals being met, our political entertainment. Both the pleasures and the horrors of the world. It’s not satisfied with that. That’s a sign of readiness.
Tom Park:
Wow, that’s good news.
Gangaji:
That’s actually good news.
Tom Park:
Sorry to stop you here.
Gangaji:
No, please.
Tom Park:
But the good news is an unsettled state.
Gangaji:
That’s right, that’s right.
Tom Park:
It’s important for people to hear this, especially if someone’s there. That you support them with the clarity about this. I want to ask you to say it again, maybe a different way.
Gangaji:
So this discomfort, this existential, very deep discomfort is actually a sign that the identity that we have assumed, however good it may be at that time, is too small for the truth of ourselves.
