Louise Hay text excerpt:

Louise Hay:
And the only thing I do is to help people learn how to love themselves. That’s the entire scope of my work.
Tom:
Now that’s too simple isn’t it?
Louise Hay:
Well it sounds very simple, and yet I find that when I am working with people the main problem most people have is the lack of love for themselves. And because of this, they do all sorts of strange things. They beat themselves up, they criticize themselves, sometimes they abuse themselves with drugs or alcohol or cigarettes or food or many other ways. And by learning to love who they are, they can let those habits go.
Tom:
Last night I attended a talk that you gave prior to the seminar weekend you’re going to be doing here. And having seen you work for an hour and a quarter or so with the people, actively in the audience, and seeing how very powerfully and but how simply you dealt with the whole multiplicity of situations that came up. She’s going to be saying “love yourself.”
Louise Hay:
You see, that’s the message to get and most people will do almost anything but accept that. They want to say “yes, but.” You know always the famous “yes, but.” And then they go off and deviate somehow. If you only knew my problem. If you knew my mother. If you knew my husband or whatever. Then you would say that wouldn’t be the answer and yet it is the answer. And that’s why I keep coming back to it over and over again. If we could really just understand how simple it is: that all we have to do is love and accept ourselves as we are, right here and right now, we could change the whole world. And so I keep saying it over and over again.
Tom:
So is it that nature of human beings is such that the problem really is this containable?
Louise Hay:
As I see it, I see it that way a lot, yes. And we grow up, we choose to grow up in families where they tell us that’s not true. We choose to grow up in societies where they tell us that’s not true. And yet that seems to be the truth of ourselves.
You know, If you go to the bible, what was Jesus’s big message? “Love thy neighbor as thy self.” People forget about “thy self” and they try to go out and take care of everybody else. And you can’t really do that until you can take care of yourself.
You know it is interesting, I find women who have breast cancer, which is so prevalent these days. Almost all of them do not know how to nourish themselves. The breasts represent nourishment and mothering. And they’re usually so busy taking care of other people, that they forget that they exist. And a women with breast cancer needs desperately to know that she has to learn how to say no. She has to say no, I’m going to come first now. No, it’s my turn. No, today is for me. If she’s going to heal herself, that’s what she needs to do.
